A LOVELY LITTLE MARKET

Each Wednesday afternoon First Baptist Church in Shaker Heights is home to a lovely little farmers' market.

A dozen or so vendors have been on hand each week offering farm-fresh fruits and vegetables from Blue Pike Farm and others, berries, eggs, artisan preserves from Abby's Kitchen, maple products, teas, vegan baked goods, and more.

There are also a number of vendors serving prepared foods. Traditional Korean dishes like bulgogi and kimchi from Do Shi Rak, seasonal fruit "shake-ups" from Real Früt, vegan black bean burgers and raspberry brownies from Vim and Vegan, and more freshly made foods that hit the spot on a hot, summer afternoon when you don't feel like cooking and need to cool off after some market shopping.

The FBC Market also offers dinner each week at the market. Busy folks can order and take it to go or you can relax and enjoy dinner in the market's tented dining area.

The number of vendors here is fairly small but on each visit I've made, I seem to find just the right variety of fruits, vegetables and prepared goodies. The market is located in a sunny corner of the church parking lot with convenient parking close by and the beautiful church tower looming above. The vibe is relaxed and unhurried and begs you to stay a little longer.

For me, the timing couldn't be better. By Wednesday, last weekend's market purchases start to run thin and the weekend is still a few days off. Picking up a few just-picked peas and a quart of fresh berries is all the inspiration I need to create a delicious, local mid-week meal.

I heard through the grapevine that the season's first peaches and blueberries are making their appearance at this week's FBC Market. I'll probably see you there this afternoon.
