Sunday in the Country

If you’ve been meaning to get out and visit a farm or two this summer, next weekend offers a great opportunity to do so.

Next Sunday, August 21, 2011, two of our favorite local farmers will be part of Innovative Farmers of Ohio’s summer farm tour.

Here’s the schedule:

11:00am-1:00pm:

Visit Red Basket Farm (who grew our sweet corn this week). Learn from, Floyd Davis, how his specialty sweet corn has evolved to include over 70 vegetable varieties for farmers markets, a CSA, and a public school farm to school program.  Also learn how Floyd has extended his growing season with the use of high tunnel hoop houses.

Red Basket Farm is located at 6311 Mayburn Barclay Road, Kinsman, OH 44428, tel: 330-876-9118, www.redbasketfarm.com.

2:00-4:00pm:

Join Aaron & Melissa Miller at Miller Livestock just down the road for a “Pasture Walk” to learn about his sustainable meat production methods. Miller Livestock is proud of their decade-long commitment to raising grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured pork, and pastured-raised chicken and turkeys without chemicals, antibiotics or hormones. Aaron will describe his diverse marketing methods from selling to restaurants and farmers markets to his own farm stand and CSA that allow him to farm full-time.

Miller Livestock is located at: 9590 Kinsman-Pymatuning Rd, Kinsman, OH 44428, tel: 330-876-5655 www.millergrassfed.com
